Serengeti National ParkAnother beautiful day in the Serengeti, although some of our group had a less restful night after some of the local lion pride walked through camp. We had heard them calling the night before, and noticed that the calls seemed to come from the right side of camp…no they seem closer…aren’t they on the left side now…? Apparently the calls stopped about the time one of the lionesses decided that the side of a tent seemed like a nice soft spot for a nap. The occupants were unharmed, although rather unnerved. By the morning the lioness had moved on (I guess uninterested in coffee and porridge by the fire), and the group was together again. We drove along the Mara river, enjoying a large group of hippo and noting the presence of a couple of crocodiles, likely getting in position for the wildebeest crossing to come. We briefly saw a rather shy leopard cub in a tree, hiding behind the leaves and nowhere near as social as our friendly neighborhood lion pride. Stopping by the pride and waving hello became a morning and afternoon ritual as we came and went from camp; unfortunately counting the pride was next to impossible, so you could never quite be sure if anyone had gone out for provisions. |
